ODDITIES THEATER: Hiruko the Goblin (1991)

It’s Saturday… you know what that means? Oooohhhh yyyyeeessss, it’s time to GET WEIRD.

Today we’ll be watching Shinya Tsukamoto’s Hiruko the Goblin. This movie is the result of Tsukamoto tossing three classic films into his brain blender (Ghostbusters, Evil Dead, & The Thing). This movie is nuts and so much fun!

I’m slowly making my way through Tsukamoto’s entire filmography. I think I only have four left to watch before I’ve seen them all. Brilliant filmmaker. Always trying something new and interesting. Not afraid to take risks or to tell a story that mainstream audiences won’t “get.” We need more writers/directors like Shinya Tsukamoto in the world. Pick up his Solid Metal Nightmares boxset if you haven’t already. You won’t be disappointed.

Now, go and get your tiny chocolates and tiny bottles of wine, grab a blanket and listen to the tale of Hiruko the Goblin.

See ya on the other side.
